RHONDA GATES
Rhonda Gates is an artist whose work investigates the poetic intersection of geometry, landscape, and color. Based in Rockford, Illinois, Gates creates paintings and mixed media works in which precise spatial structures meet atmospheric shifts and subtle gradients. Her compositions draw inspiration from architecture, mapping, and the rhythms of the natural world, resulting in images that oscillate between diagram and dreamscape. Through this fusion of order and intuition, Gates constructs visual environments that invite sustained observation and quiet contemplation.
Gates approaches painting as a process of building and balancing spatial relationships. Using layered planes, crisp edges, and carefully modulated color, she develops compositions that feel both methodical and emotionally resonant. Shapes appear to hover, recede, or settle into delicate equilibrium, recalling horizons, shelters, or imagined terrains. Although rooted in abstraction, her works often evoke the sensory experience of moving through space, reflecting her interest in how memory, perception, and place converge. The clarity of her forms, paired with the gentle shifts of light and tone, creates a vocabulary that is contemplative, architectural, and subtly lyrical. Gates earned her MFA from the University of Wisconsin Madison and her BFA from Rockford University. Her work has been exhibited widely across the Midwest and beyond, including presentations at Zolla/Lieberman Gallery in Chicago, the Rockford Art Museum, the University of Wisconsin Galleries, and contemporary art spaces throughout the region. |
